Contact the lender for the specific loan that is in default. If you don't know who to contact, call your college's financial aid office to ask for the loan contact information. A school cannot set up the rehabilitation of your loan.
Fill out the required forms to ask for a rehabilitation payment plan. The required form varies depending on the lender. When you contact the lender, company representative can email or mail you the forms you need.
Submit the forms to the lender as instructed on the forms. The lender will evaluate the forms and contact you.
Work with the lender to determine a payment amount that is fair to the lender and an amount you can afford to pay. Don't let a lender tell you that you cannot negotiate this payment.
Make each of your scheduled payments by the due date in the next nine of 10 months to pull your loan out of default. Some lenders give you a grace period beyond the due date. After the rehabilitation period, your payments return to your previously agreed upon amount.
