What is the Newbery Medal given for illustrations or literacy?

The Newbery Medal is given for literary excellence, not illustrations.

It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Caldecott Medal, on the other hand, is awarded for the most distinguished American picture book for children.
