Why was the Nobel Peace Prize created?

Alfred Nobel created the Nobel Peace Prize as a way to promote goodwill. In his last will and testament, Nobel wrote that the prize should be "awarded to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for brotherhood between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
