Who can win the Pulitzer Prize?

* Journalism. U.S. newspapers, magazines, or news services that have published or broadcast outstanding material on U.S. national affairs, international reporting, local reporting, investigative reporting, feature writing, editorial writing, commentary, criticism, and cartoons. Books about U.S. history or biography written by U.S. authors and published in the U.S. by U.S. publishers.

* Letters, Drama and Music. Works by U.S. citizens or permanent residents, regardless of where the work was published. This includes novels, short fiction, history, biography, autobiography, poetry, general nonfiction, and drama. (Drama must have had an American premiere within the eligibility year.) For music, there are separate awards for compositions in several categories: orchestral music, chamber music, a large work in any medium by a composer who has not previously won the award in this category, and instrumental or chamber music for a combination of five or more players. Compositions must be by U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must have had their first performances or recording releases in the U.S. during the eligibility year.

* Special Citations and Awards. There are also occasional special awards and citations given for work that doesn't fall into any existing category or for other reasons.
