He became a fighter pilot for the Royal Air Force during World War II, and he often wrote about his experiences as a pilot in his books. He flew with No 80 Squadron RAF, flying Gloster Gladiators and Hawker Hurricanes, and was posted to the Middle East. In late 1940 he was serving in Greece, but in July 1940, he was seriously injured when his Hawker Hurricane crashed.
