Sunderland was born in Syracuse, New York in 1854. He studied at the University of Rochester and the Boston Conservatory of Music. After graduating, he taught music in Boston for several years.
In the 1880s, Sunderland became a follower of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He served as a missionary in the United States and Europe, and he eventually moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Sunderland was a prolific composer, and he wrote hundreds of songs, hymns, and anthems. He also wrote several books, including:
