*Carolina Ahlsell was born into an upper-class family to Swedish parents in Falun, Dalecarlia, Sweden, on 19 January 1779. She spent her entire childhood and youth there. Her mother was Johanna Augusta Westerström and her father was Gustaf Westerström, who was assessor of Dalecarlian Bergs College.*
She started writing poetry at a very young age. Her first published poem, "Vid en ung flickas graf," was published in the Falun weekly newspaper Mercurius in 1795. She married in 1801 and moved with her husband to Skåne. Carolina continued to write; her poetry is distinguished by a love of nature, and her poems often depict the beautiful landscapes of Sweden.
In 1811, she published her first collection of poems, Dikter. The book was well-received and established her as a leading poet of the Swedish Romantic period. She went on to publish several more volumes of poetry, as well as translations of foreign works, including Shakespeare and Schiller.
In addition to her poetry, Ahlsell was also an active member of several literary societies and organizations. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights and education.
Carolina Andriette Ahlsell died in Karlskrona, Sweden, on 23 July 1859, at the age of 80. She is considered one of the most important poets of the Swedish Romantic period. Her work continues to be widely read and enjoyed today.
