Who is Elizabeth C Bunce?

Elizabeth Clifford Bunce (1791-1872)

- American inventor and philanthropist

- Born in Litchfield, Connecticut

- Daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Clifford) Bunce

- Attended Litchfield Female Academy and Litchfield Law School

- Invented the Bunce Fire Escape, a portable device that allowed people to escape from burning buildings

- Patented the invention in 1836

- Worked with the New York State Orphan Asylum to install Bunce Fire Escapes in all its buildings

- Also invented a number of other devices, including a cooking stove and a washing machine

- Wrote several books, including "The Mother's Book" (1833) and "The Invalid's Companion" (1844)

- Active in the women's rights movement and the abolitionist movement

- Died in Litchfield, Connecticut, at the age of 81
