Why did the Spanish attacked English merchants in Mexico?

There is no historical record of Spanish attacks on English merchants in Mexico. While there were conflicts and tensions between Spain and England in other parts of the world, such as the Anglo-Spanish War, they did not involve direct attacks on English merchants in Mexico.
