Why did Walter Dean Myers end up publishing his first book?

Walter Dean Myers started writing stories in his early teens, and at the age of 17 he published his first book "Where Does the Day Go?" with the Harlem Writers Guild, a nonprofit organization promoting the African-American culture in New York City.
