How did george kill Lennie in the novel of mice and men?

In the novel "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, George does not kill Lennie directly. Instead, he mercifully shoots him in the back of the head with his rifle out of compassion and to prevent him from suffering a more prolonged and painful death at the hands of the angry mob pursuing him after he accidentally kills Curley's wife.
