How did the Stevens family help lyddie and charlie Chapter 1?

In Chapter 1 of the novel "Lyddie", by Katherine Paterson, the Stevens family does not appear or is not mentioned. The Stevens family plays a larger role in the later parts of the book, so while they do not provide any help to Lyddie or Charlie specifically in Chapter 1, they do so later on in the story.
