Why does Chet help and befriend Julie in the book Flipped?

In the book "Flipped", Chet does not befriend Julie. In fact, he is one of the students who picks on her because of her strange behavior and appearance. It is Bryce, not Chet, who eventually develops feelings for Julie and becomes her friend.
