Learning assessment test were established to determine what students learn and retain. Results indicate where students have trouble and the areas of study that need improvement. Most learning assessments occur at the beginning and end of grade levels. The results can be viewed by the student, their teachers, and their parents.
Distance learning assessments are required for students who wish to participate in a distance learning program. The assessment determines if the student can work independently with online lectures or recorded lectures. These assessments will show if the student is capable of learning at the same rate as a student who attends class.
Parents who suspect their child has a learning disability should contact the teacher or school officials. An assessment will be administered to determine if the child has a learning disability. Testing is required by federal and state regulation because these students will be exempt from taking learning assessments of standard criteria that are mandatory for their graduation. These tests will help teachers and school officials determine what programs or types of learning and special attention is needed by the child.
Reading assessments are administered to students at their appropriate grade level. They will be given passages or stories to read and tested on how well they retain and understand what they read. Sometimes reading assessments will intentionally leave out words from the passage to see if the child can place them properly. This is called a Cloze task assessment.
Some states have learning assessments that are used to see what areas students have trouble learning in. Other assessments are required to meet graduation requirements. For example, the Ohio Graduation Test tests students on what they learned in grade levels 4, 6, 9 and 12 and is a graduation requirement. Students begin practicing for the test in middle school.
