Tips on GED Test Taking

Passing the General Equivalency Diploma exam, or GED, is the equivalent of graduating from high school. The tests are for writing, reading, science, social studies and math and each consists of 40 to 50 multiple choice questions and one essay question. Attaining a GED creates job opportunities and is a requirement to get a driver's license in some states. If you are worried about taking the test, there are things you can do to improve your chances of passing.
  1. Study

    • This might seem obvious, but the best way to prepare for the GED test is to study for it by either purchasing the GED study guide or taking a GED preparation course.

    Every Question

    • Make sure you answer every question on the GED test. You are not penalized for giving an incorrect answer, so even if you do not know the answer and have to guess, it is better than leaving the question blank.

    Educated Guess

    • If you have to guess at an answer, try to eliminate the obviously wrong answers first. Each multiple choice question has five possible answers. A random choice gives you a 20 percent chance of guessing correctly. Eliminate at least one possible answer and the chances of picking the correct answer increases to 25 percent. Eliminate two answers and the odds increase to 33 percent. If you can eliminate three answers, you have a 50/50 chance of answering correctly. If you studied for the exam, the chances of eliminating at least two answers are very good.

    Review

    • Try to leave time at the end of the exam to review your answers. Going back over your work is a good way to spot questions you accidentally answered wrong or to take another educated guess at questions you were not sure of on the first pass.

    Changing

    • If you change an answer while taking the test or reviewing your answers, make sure you thoroughly erase your original answer. Except for the essay, a machine grades the test. If the machine thinks there are two answers for one question, neither answer is scored, so it is important to erase original answers completely.

    Relax

    • Try not to get too worked up while taking the test. If you find yourself getting stressed while taking the test, try taking a few deep breaths and stretching your arms and legs.
