Basic algebra questions will cover topics like percentages, inequalities, fractions, equations and basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These problems are usually put into word problem format or presented as singular equations which are solved for X or Y. Students who have taken basic algebra courses throughout high school should be well prepared for these questions, but brushing up on basic skills will help prepare for the placement test.
Intermediate algebra questions cover topics such as point value, slope, maximum value, binomials, simplifying equations and sum of the root. Students who have covered at least Algebra 1 should feel fairly comfortable with these topics, but it would be a good idea to study these concepts thoroughly before the test since they are more difficult than just basic algebra concepts. Reviewing these concepts with a math teacher or tutor should help too.
Advanced algebra will involve problems about more difficult root sums, vertical and horizontal asymptotes, real zeros, complex equations and polynomials. A student who has completed Algebra 2 and some calculus will be much more prepared for these types of questions, but they can be studied and learned before the test is taken. A math book, online practice tests, a tutor or a teacher could help with these more complicated concepts.
Pre-calculus problems will be much more complicated than algebra problems. Students who have taken some form of calculus in high school will be more prepared, but basic calculus concepts can be learned before the test is taken. Pre-calculus questions cover topics such as surface area of various shapes, solving difficult equations for multiple letters, real solutions, simplifying complex equations and trigonometry equations.
