The writing part of the GED is broken into two separate sections. The first section is all multiple-choice questions. You will be asked to select the correct grammar, or make the correct grammatical change to a sentence. You will also be asked, though multiple-choice questions, to organize sentences and paragraphs so that they make sense, and are grammatically correct. In the second section of the writing test, you will be asked to write a short essay on a given topic. In order to do your best on the writing section of the test, you may want to take one or more high school language arts or English classes. Some college classes, such as English 101, can also be helpful. Many community colleges allow younger students to take classes, for a fee.
The reading section of the GED will ask you to read, analyze, and comprehend several different pieces of writing, both non-fiction and fiction. Some of the writing you'll be asked to read will also be poetry. Questions will be asked in a multiple-choice format. Again, basic high school language arts classes can greatly aid you with this section, as well as some beginning college courses. GED preparation classes are also available for all of the sections of the test. Check with your local GED testing facility to find out more about preparation classes in your area.
The social studies section of the GED will test your knowledge on a variety of different social studies topics. It will also test how well you analyze and process information. Because of the different topics covered in the test, you will be most prepared if you have knowledge of both American and world history, economics, government and civic studies, and geography. This knowledge can be gained through high school classes, entry-level college classes, GED preparation classes, or through studying by yourself.
The mathematics part also has two sections. During the first part, you will be allowed to use a calculator. You will not be able to use one in the second part. These sections of the GED will test your understanding of number operations, statistics, data analysis, geometry, and algebra. Most high school math classes can help you study for these areas. GED preparation classes can also be helpful here.
Much of the science section of the GED is devoted to life science knowledge, which tests your understanding of the world around you. Physics, chemistry, Earth science and space science will also be included in this section. Basic high school classes, GED preparation classes, and self-studying for these specific areas of science can aid you with this part of the test.
