How do you determine character traits when reading?

There are a few ways to determine character traits when reading.

1. Pay attention to the character's actions and dialogue. What does the character do? What do they say? Their actions and words can give you a lot of information about their personality. For example, if a character is always helping others, they might be kind and compassionate. If a character is always making jokes, they might be funny and outgoing.

2. Consider the character's relationships with other characters. How does the character interact with other people? Do they get along well with everyone, or do they have conflicts with certain people? Their relationships can tell you a lot about their personality. For example, if a character is always arguing with their friends, they might be stubborn or quick-tempered.

3. Look for patterns in the character's behavior. What are the character's consistent behaviors? What do they do over and over again? Their consistent behaviors can give you a lot of information about their personality. For example, if a character is always late for appointments, they might be disorganized or forgetful.

4. Consider the character's background and experiences. What has the character been through in their life? What kind of experiences have they had? Their background and experiences can shape their personality. For example, if a character has been through a lot of trauma, they might be cautious or guarded.

5. Read between the lines. Sometimes, the most important information about a character is not explicitly stated. You have to read between the lines to figure out what the character is really like. For example, if a character is always talking about their accomplishments, they might be insecure or needy for validation.

By paying attention to these factors, you can get a good understanding of a character's personality.
