Köhler's experiments were conducted in the early 20th century with chimpanzees as subjects. He placed the chimps in a cage with a banana hanging from the ceiling, just out of reach. He then provided them with sticks that they could use to knock down the banana. At first, the chimpanzees tried to reach the banana directly or use the sticks to poke at it. However, after some trial and error, they figured out that they could use the sticks to knock down the banana.
Köhler's Experiments with Children
Köhler conducted a similar experiment with children, using a different apparatus. He placed a marble in a water-filled jar, just out of reach of the children. He then provided them with a stick that they could use to try to reach the marble. The children quickly figured out that they could use the stick to stir the water and bring the marble closer to the surface, making it easier to retrieve.
