Call your child's school to find out if it has a spelling bee program in place. Get as much information as possible. Find out if your child needs a sponsor such as a local business to participate. If your school district does not have a spelling bee program, ask about local competitions in which your child could compete, or ask how you might be able to start a program in the district.
Make flashcards with words that are commonly included in the list for the competitions. See "Resources" for a link to sample lists.
Include the definitions of the words, the part of speech and the use of the word in a sentence. These will all help your child get a good grasp of the words. They are also allowed to ask for all of this information during the spelling bee competition.
Play spelling games such as Scrabble and Boggle with your child. This will not only help prepare her for the spelling bee, but will also allow her to have fun with you and other family members.
Take your child to a spelling bee before she competes in one. This will give her a first-hand idea of what to expect when she is competing.
Encourage your child to relax and have fun. As with any extracurricular activity, don't excessively pressure your child to win. This may result in him losing interest and not wanting to participate in future spelling bees.
