Preschool Winter Literacy Activities

Teachers have a plethora of choices when it comes to teaching literacy to preschoolers---including activities geared for wintertime. Preschool-age children need to remain engaged and motivated during lessons. The best way to maintain motivation in children this age is by making lessons interactive and short in duration. Many preschools implement rotational activities for literacy lessons, encouraging children to engage with one activity for a specified time before rotating to the next one.
  1. Predictable Winter Sequence Chart

    • A predictable chart models the reading process and sequence of thoughts. The KinderPlans website shows an example of a predictable chart with the heading "In the winter." The chart features a sequence of things that can be done in wintertime. The teacher pastes pictures next to the sentences to guide the reading of the students. Each picture depicts the sentence and its action. For example, a sentence might read, "I see a snowman," with a picture of a snowman glued next to the sentence. This aids children in their reading skills by providing a way to predict the words in the sentence, promoting word recognition.

    Winter Words

    • A winter vocabulary book allows students to begin to develop their letter- and word-recognition skills. First, the teacher cuts blank pages in the shape of snowmen for the students' construction of their booklets, according to Kindergarten-Lessons.com. The students paste a carrot nose, hat and buttons on the snowman for decoration. The teacher helps children write the title "Winter Words" on the cover of their booklet. Children color and paste pictures with word headings into their booklet pages. Each page in the booklet represents a different category of words, such as winter foods and winter clothes.

    Poem Role Play

    • This activity requires the teacher to find or create a winter-related poem for the class with descriptive winter words. One example is "Winter Time Poem" on the Gayle's Preschool Rainbow website. The teacher makes a poster of the poem to hang at the front of the class, including pictures next to the key words in the sentences. The pictures encourage word association by having the children rehearse movements and actions for the key words. Children follow along while the poem is read by using the associated actions. For example, a line of the poem can read, "Watch the snowflakes as they fall," and the children can show their fingers waving as their hands fall.

    Winter Memory Cards

    • This activity involves students playing a memory game to develop letter- or word-recognition skills. The teacher makes two identical sets of cards with pictures of winter activities or words, and either writes the first letter or the whole word under the picture. Students place both sets of cards face down on a surface. During her turn, a child chooses two cards. If the cards match, she keeps both cards, which count as a point. If the cards do not match, she places the cards face-down in their original spots. The game continues until all the cards have been matched, with the winner having the most points.
