Preschool Programs in Public Schools

The growing body of early childhood education and child development research indicates the importance of preschool to a child's future. A quality preschool experience can greatly impact the growing child's cognitive, social, physical and emotional development. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, quality early childhood education also should be affordable for all families with young children. Many parents can find free or low-cost preschool programs operating through city or district-based public schools.
  1. Chicago Public Schools

    • The Chicago Public Schools offer a variety of preschool programs for children who are under school age. The Child Parent Center program operates in 13 locations and is designed to provide low-income children ages 3 through 5 with an early learning experience in the English language and mathematics. The Head Start Child Development Program, which operates 140 sites around the Chicago area, is open to 3- and 4-year-olds. Full- or half-day preschool is available through Chicago's Head Start for families who meet or fall below the current federal poverty line level. Families who do not meet the Head Start income guidelines may apply for the Preschool for All program. This half-day early childhood education program aims to prepare young children for school through the introduction of reading, mathematics and writing. Chicago Public Schools also offer a tuition-based preschool for children from 3 to 5 years of age, located in several city elementary school buildings. This full-day preschool requires parents to pay an affordable yearly tuition.

    Pittsburgh Public Schools

    • City of Pittsburgh residents with children ages 3 through 5 may qualify for the no-cost early childhood programs Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program and Pre-K Counts Program, offered by the Pittsburgh Public Schools system. Additionally, children under 3 years of age may participate in the Early Head Start program. Preschool services include education, child development, early intervention, mental health, social service and nutrition. Parents must apply for the preschool program. Application requirements include the child's age via birth certificate (children must be between 3 and 5 years of age), the child's record of immunization, a physical exam report by the child's pediatrician, valid income data and two different documents verifying residence within the city limits.
