Teach your toddlers the bumblebee song and have them "buzz" in a circle while singing the song. The song goes, "Six buzzing bumblebees, flying around the hive, one buzzes off and that leaves five. Five buzzing bumblebees, flying near my door, one buzzes off and that leaves four. Four buzzing bumblebees, flying around a tree, one buzzes off and that leaves three. Three buzzing bumblebees, in the sky so blue, one buzzes off and that leaves two. Two buzzing bumblebees, flying by the sun, one buzzes off and that leaves one. One buzzing bumblebee, looking for some fun, it buzzes off and that leaves none."
Have the toddlers sit in a circle and teach them about the different parts of a bumblebee. Use a picture showing the toddlers where the bee's eyes, stomach, legs and wings are. Show them that the thorax is the bee's chest. Keep practicing to familiarize the toddlers with the body parts of a bumblebee. Let all the toddlers stand up in a circle and pretend to be bumblebees. Ask them, "Where's your head at bumblebees?" and the toddlers should reply, "Here's my head," while pointing at their heads. Keep asking questions, such as "Where's your thorax?" and "Where's your legs?" If the toddlers get the questions correct, ask them, "Where are your wings, little bumblebees?" and when they point to their back, let them "buzz" around the room until your ring a bell telling them to come back to the circle.
Allow toddlers to create a bumblebee craft using yellow plastic plates, black acrylic paint or a black marker, wax paper, scissors, googly eyes, glue, tape and black paper. Help the toddlers paint or color black stripes on the black of the plate to create the bee's black stripes. On one end of the paper plate, glue a set of googly eyes and draw a nose, mouth and eyebrows to create the bee's face. Cut a black triangle out of construction paper and glue or tape it to the other end of the plate. Cut u-shaped pieces out of the wax paper to create the bee's wings and tape them to the plate. Have an adult help the toddlers with the scissors and glue for safety reasons.
