Give children a piece of poster board or card stock and ask them to draw a portrait of each member of their family. These family members can include parents or guardians, siblings, pets and grandparents. Encourage creativity by making available a variety of art supplies to draw the portraits, such as chalk, markers, colored pencils, charcoal and washable paint.
Ask children to reminisce about a time they had the most fun with their family. This could include a vacation, a backyard family picnic or a visit from relatives. Have children leaf through old magazines to find special outfits for their family members to wear. In the magazines, they may also locate eyes, lips, noses and hairstyles that resemble those they love and accessories they can use to tell the story of their favorite family memory.
Children may choose their favorite holiday and either bring from home or draw pictures of their family celebrating that seasonal event. Christmas, Halloween and Easter are common family functions that can easily be displayed on a picture board. Costumes, traditions and funny moments are all captured in one exhibit for all to see.
Include pictures from infancy through the present of each family member on a Then-and-Now picture board. Arrange the pictures chronologically from left to right, one row for each family member. You can easily see age progression and family similarities in this project. Make copies of the pictures using a color copier to avoid using irreplaceable portraits.
