Preschool Activities About Moses

The story of Moses can be fascinating for preschoolers, with a baby floating down a river, a burning bush, the parting of the Red Sea, and the multiple plagues that afflict the Egyptians. Using crafts, food and drama to teach about Moses will help students better understand the Biblical concepts and retain them longer.
  1. Baby Moses Craft

    • Make enough salt dough for each student to have about a quarter-cup. Help students make a simple Baby Moses out of the dough by making a ball for his head and a cylinder for his body. Help students give each doll eyes, a nose, and mouth with markers. Give each student several pipe cleaners, and help them weave them into a simple basket. Have students place their Baby Moses dolls in their baskets. While students work, relate the story of how Baby Moses floated down the Nile River.

    Baby Moses Play

    • Select four students to play the roles of Moses' mother, Miriam, the Princess, and the Princess's servant. The play starts with Moses' mother tucking him in the basket and instructing Miriam to watch him as he floats down the Nile. Next, the Princess and her servant notice the baby, and the Princess wants to keep him. Miriam tells the Princess she knows a woman who could care for him. The Princess tells her to bring the woman to her. Miriam does so, and the Princess arranges for Moses' own mother to care for him.

    Baby Moses Story in Food

    • For each child, fill a transparent plastic cup with blue gelatin and let it set. As the lesson begins, tell the children you are going to create the story of Moses with food. Explain that the blue gelatin represents the waters of the Nile. Then spray a small amount of whipped cream into each child's cup to represent the basket. Have children top the cream with grapes to represent the body of the baby Moses, and small pieces of banana to represent his head. Have children place pretzel sticks around the sides of the cup to represent reeds.

    Exodus Recipe

    • Use this recipe to teach about the Exodus, explaining that God commanded Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land of milk and honey. Cut several apples into thin slices in advance. Allow the children to help you mix one cup of peanut butter with two tablespoons of honey. Place a small amount of the mixture on a plate for each child, along with several apple slices. Encourage students to dip the apples into the peanut butter mixture and eat them. Serve with a glass of milk.
