Position the paper along the child's midline. Tilt the sheet "so that the top right corner of the paper is closer to the child than the top left corner," according to the Handedness Research Institute.
After identifying the ideal angle, place a strip of masking tape on the paper for a visual reference.
Place the child's arm perpendicular to the bottom of the page and straighten his wrist.
Position the child's left hand far enough back from the point of the pencil so that he can see the paper as he writes. Mark the pencil at the appropriate distance to remind the child where to grip.
Instruct the child to write directional letters, including "F," "P" and "B." Place a finger between words if a student has trouble with spacing.
Allow the child to copy a page from a text in a careful manner. Have the child trace over the written words if he has trouble copying the text.
