Make a booklet by folding a piece of legal paper in half. Print copies of "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" and glue the rhyme to the cover of each booklet. On the inside of the booklets, write the following:
What Rhymes?
2 and ____
4 and ____
6 and ____
8 and ____
10 and ___
Read, "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe." Let the children draw pictures of the rhyming words to complete the activity.
Show the children how to act out "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," and how to create new verses to the rhyme. Encourage the children to say the rhyme as you read it. Ask the children brainstorm how to act out each line of the rhyme, giving every child an opportunity to participate in the activity. Let the children say the rhyme several times so that everyone demonstrates their motions for acting out a line. Another option is to assign one line of the rhyme to each child.
Ask the children to sit in a circle. Place unifix cubes in a basket. Let each child measure his shoes using the unifix cubes. Encourage the children to identify the longest and shortest shoe lengths. Create a graph that represents the shoe lengths.
Print and cut out footprint shapes. Write one line from the rhyme, "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" on each foot print. Laminate the foot prints and place them on the floor. Show the children how to "walk" the rhyme as they recite the lines together. Make a large shoe shape on a flip chart or white board. Provide an example of a shoe word such as, "sneaker" and ask the children to name other shoe words. Write the shoe words on the shoe shape.
