Help students learn to write numbers with sidewalk chalk. Provide students with chalk in different colors and sizes. If possible, go outside and work on the sidewalk. Show them how to hold chalk sideways to get a different effect. Create a hopscotch board and let students fill it in with numbers. When you are done, give students cups of water to pour on the writing and clean the sidewalk. Alternatively, give students small chalkboards or construction paper to practice writing numbers in the classroom.
Teach your students how to write numbers with a paintbrush. Give each student thick paper, paint brushes in different sizes and a variety of paints. Ask students to write numbers zero through nine. Encourage them to use different sized brushes to develop their fine motor skills. When they are done, let the paintings dry.
Develop your students' fine motor skills with homemade lacing cards. Write numbers on plain index cards. Use a hole punch to punch holes over the numbers you have drawn, leaving small spaces between each hole. Give each student a long piece of brightly colored yarn; tape one end so that it is easy to hold and maneuver, and tie a knot on the other end. Show students how to thread the yarn through the holes on the index card. When they are done, tie the second end to the back of the card. You may want to laminate the cards before punching the holes so that they can be reused.
Make writing numbers fun with a glitter writing activity. Give students bottles of glue or glue sticks and a paper with numbers zero through nine written lightly in pencil. Ask students to trace over the numbers with the glue. Next, encourage students to sprinkle glitter over the glue. Let the glue dry, then help students dump the excess glitter into a designated container. As an alternative, use sand or colored rice instead of glitter.
