Preschool Bug Lesson

Bugs are more than just creepy crawly little things that live outside. Insects are interesting. Teach kids all about them in a variety of different ways, using these ideas for a preschool bug lesson plan. From engaging art activities to books during circle time, kids definitely get bugged out about bugs with these lessons.
  1. Circle Time

    • During circle time, teach kids about bugs by showing them insect objects, as well as reading them a book about bugs. Small bug figurines or pictures of the insects are a wonderful way to introduce kids to bugs. In addition; read kids a book such as "The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carle or "Ten Little Ladybugs" by Melanie Gerthr.

    Arts and Crafts

    • An insect collage brings an artsy element into this lesson plan. Teachers should pre-cut construction paper into bug shapes such as butterflies or ladybugs. Kids can glue on pieces of colored tissue paper to create this easy art collage.

    Activity

    • No good lesson plan is without an engaging activity. Have kids watch a video on the different bumble bee dances, then let them imitate what they saw by putting the dances to music. Or, do a bug-matching game. Glue pictures of two matching bugs on index cards. Create several sets (worms, bumble bees, ants, ladybugs, caterpillars and butterflies). Have kids take turns turning over cards and making matches.

    Science

    • Help kids complete a science experiment by finding out what ants eat. Bury (to the rim) a few containers of different foods (put foods that attract bugs in some containers, and a couple containers full of foods that do not attract bugs) in the ground. Place a piece of cardboard on top of the container. Have kids guess which foods they think the bugs eat, and which they do not. Check back later that day, or the next, to see which containers the ants ate out of.
