Preschool Reading Corner Ideas

Getting preschool students interested in reading is the first step to a successful academic career. One of the keys to introducing reading to children at such a young age is to make it fun and interesting for them. An ideal way teachers can do this is to designate a place, such as a nook or corner area, in their classrooms for this purpose.
  1. Themes

    • Creating a theme for a reading corner can pique preschoolers' interest in reading. A theme can be centered around a topic being focused on during story time or the current season. A theme can be developed with pictures on the wall, decorations hanging from the ceiling or color patterns used on pillows and chairs. Toys in the reading corner can also represent the theme.

    Pillows and Rugs

    • Comfortable, special places to sit in the reading corner is a prerequisite. Large pillows and a rug or multiple rugs can provide the preschoolers casual sitting to entice them into listening to the story being read to them. Make sure there is enough space for the number of children being read to.

    A Rocking Chair

    • A rocking chair is a fine place for the reader to sit in the reading corner. A rocking chair adds to the ambiance of the reading corner, creating a relaxing place for the children to listen to the story being read to them.

    Books and Shelves

    • Of course, you need books in your reading corner. Have a bunch of shelves full of books invites preschoolers into the reading corner to explore the stories. Having books out in an informal nature also provides a casualness inviting to preschoolers. Make sure books shelves are not too high for preschoolers to easily access them.
