- NSG was constituted on 15 October, 1948 as the National Service Reserve with the aim to provide a voluntary disciplined community force for the support and assistance to the civil authorities.
- The National Service Guard (NSG) was raised on the recommendations of the B N Rau Committee that was set up in the aftermath of the communal riots in 1947 to examine security arrangements for the capital.
- NSG is one of the two Armed Forces of the Republic of India whose primary role is to guard important and sensitive establishments and installations.
- Currently NSG has strength of 11 battalions. All the battalions are multi tasked which have capability of handling all sort of situations ranging from internal security, VIP security, Counter hijacking and counter terrorism.
