How to Teach Hacky Sack to Middle School

"Footbag" is the real name for the game of hacky sack; the term "hacky sack" is actually the name of a footbag manufacturer. The goal of this game is to keep the bag in the air for as long as possible. Any body part save the hands may be used to do this. Footbag is an ancient sport with origins in Asia and North America, and there is evidence Native American tribes played a similar game using animal hide sacks filled with sand or pellets. Teach hacky sack to middle school students in your school's gym or playing field.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide students into groups of four to six. Instruct them to stand in a circle. They should be close enough to be able to pass the ball to one another but far enough to allow room to move.

    • 2

Demonstrate the four basic moves of hacky sack. These include the inside kick, or when the ball is kicked with the side of the foot in front of the player and the outside kick, where the player kicks the ball with the bottom or side of the foot moving the leg away from the body. With the knee kick, the ball is kicked using the knees while the toe kick involves using the top of the toes. Have all participants practice each move then combine different moves once they feel comfortable.

    • 3

Go over the rules a few times so all participants have a thorough understanding. The rules include no hands allowed except when serving, always serve the bag to another player, do not bogart, or hog, the bag and avoid knee passes, which tend to end up on the ground.

    • 4

Have students play hacky sack in groups and see which group can keep the bag in the air the longest.
