Science Projects for Grades Six to Eight

It can be difficult to find appropriate science projects for kids heading into middle school. Teachers and parents must keep in mind that projects must be challenging enough that they teach middle schoolers something but aren't so difficult that the kids can't complete the project. There are a couple of different projects that are well suited and fun for kids in the sixth through eighth grade.
  1. Electric Fruit and Vegetables

    • This fruit and vegetable project is relatively easy to carry out. The purpose of the experiment is to determine what, if any, electrical charge different fruits and vegetables carry. Determining the charge of a potato compared to an apple or an orange or a lemon is done by placing probes into the fruits and vegetables and hooking those probes up to a machine that measures micro amps.

    Floating Egg Project

    • The floating egg project shows students how changing the density of water will manipulate what floats and what sinks. The project works best when using two different jars of water, salt, sugar and some eggs. First the students should place an egg in water and see whether it floats or sinks. The student should then add sugar or salt to the water to see if there are any changes to the behavior of the sinking or floating egg.

Heat And Evaporation With a Light Bulb

    • This project is done by having the students craft cardboard boxes with a hole where a light bulb can be placed. Different wattage light bulbs are used in each box and an open container of water is placed in each box as well. The students then measure how the different wattage bulbs give off different level of heat and how that affects the rate of evaporation in the containers.

    Rats, Mazes and Music.

    • The musical maze project allows students to measure if and what kind of music will better help a rat learn to navigate a maze. There should be three or more rats used in the project with the same maze. Each rat should be made to run the maze with different types of music playing (jazz, classical, rock). After each rat has ran the maze with the different types of music playing there should be some sort of pattern that the students can hypothesize about.
