Sixth Grade Science Fair Ideas on Music Affecting a Plant's Growth

Music has been shown to affect many living things, from helping hens lay more eggs, to speeding the learning of a foreign language. Does music affect the growth of plants? You can find out with a sixth grade science fair project comparing the growth of plants with and without music. You also can investigate whether the type of music makes a difference. Take pictures of the plants' responses to music and add them to your display. What you discover about musical stimulation of plants may surprise you.
  1. Does Music Affect Plant Growth?

    • You will need four easy-to-care-for plants of the same type and size in identical pots. Label two plants "Music" and the other two "No Music." Put the plants in two rooms with windows facing the same direction and kept at identical temperatures. In the room with the two "Music" plants, put the plants near the window and play classical music CDs continuously. Place the other two plants near the window in the second room. Give all the plants the same amount of water when needed. Check the plants daily and record your observations.

Does Music Affect Germination and Growth?

    • For this experiment, you need two identical pots with organic garden soil, a packet of radish seeds, a CD player, a ruler and classical CDs. Plant 20 radish seeds in each pot, labeled "Music" and "No Music." Put the pots in two rooms with windows facing the same direction and kept at identical temperatures. Give each pot the same amount of water. Play CDs in the "Music" room. Observe daily and measure and record the rate of germination and growth. You want 10 seedlings about 20 mm away from each other, so after the seedlings are established, you will need to thin them out. Graph the results.

Does the Type of Music Affect Plant Growth?

    • Find out which types of music affect plant growth using five identical plants. Label one plant "Control," and the others "Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Country." Place each plant near the window in a different room with windows facing the same direction and temperatures kept the same. Water each plant the same amount. Play the appropriate music continuously in each room. Observe the plants daily and record your observations.

Does the Type of Music Affect Germination and Plant Growth?

    • In each of five identical pots with organic garden soil, plant 20 radish seeds. Label the pots "Control, Classical, Jazz, Rock and Country." Give the same amount of water to each pot. Place the pots near the window in five different rooms with windows facing the same direction and kept at the same temperature. Continuously play the appropriate CDs in each room. Observe daily, and measure and record the rate of germination and amount of growth. Thin the seedlings to 10 seedlings about 20 mm apart. Graph your results.
