What can not schools do?

There are many things that schools cannot do. Some of these things include:

* Discriminate against students based on race, gender, religion, or national origin. This is a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

* Charge students tuition or fees for attending school. Public schools are free to attend for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status. However, some private schools and colleges charge tuition and fees.

* Expel students without due process. Students have the right to a fair hearing before they can be expelled from school.

* Use corporal punishment to discipline students. This is a violation of the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

* Censor students' speech. Students have the right to express their opinions, even if they are unpopular or controversial. However, schools can restrict students' speech if it is disruptive or harmful to others.

* Teach students religious doctrine. Public schools are secular institutions, and they cannot teach students about religion. However, they can teach about religion as a part of history or social studies.
