This is a relay game that involves both fine and gross motor skills. Divide the children into two teams. You will need four empty buckets. Station one bucket half full of water by each team at the starting line, then place one empty bucket about 15 feet away. When the race begins, each team tries to be the first to get all of their water into the empty bucket using a turkey baster. Each player takes a turn filling up a turkey baster, running to the empty bucket, squirting it in and returning. Repeat until one team transfers all of the water to the second bucket.
On a sunny day, use sidewalk chalk to cover a sidewalk or driveway with drawings of flames. Then give each child a squirt bottle and let them try to put the fires out. The water from the squirt bottle will begin to wash away the chalk, effectively "putting out" the fire. For added fun, make firefighter hats or vests to wear.
Play this water balloon game on a large area of pavement. Have the children stand at a designated starting line and, one at a time, hurl a water balloon as far as they can. Then have them use chalk to outline the splat mark made by the balloon and add their initials. Continue until everyone has had a turn. Determine who has thrown their balloon the farthest or who has made the biggest "splat."
This game allows children to make their own music with water. Tie an assortment of things to a fence or a tree so the items hang down. Appropriate items to hang include pans, bowls, beach balls, hubcaps, trash can lids and plastic lids. Let children squirt them with water guns or a hose to see what sounds they make. Have the children think of other things that might make interesting sounds and tie them up as well.
Divide the children into two teams on each side of a volleyball net. Or, if you do not have a net, tie a rope between two trees. Have each team hold a bed sheet open. Put a small water balloon in one team's sheet so they can use the sheet to throw the balloon over the net to the other team. The other team tries to catch it in their sheet and throw it back. Kindergartners do the best with this game if you help them count to three before they throw the balloon.
