Art Activities Dealing With Painting for Kindergarteners

Kindergarten students benefit from art activities in the classroom and painting is one activity that encourages creativity. In addition, these activities help develop children's fine motor skills, movements that require smaller, more concise control. You can develop a variety of painting activities to meet the needs and interests of the students in your classroom.
  1. Easel Painting

    • Provide the students with an easel and paints to use during free time. Encourage the students to paint something related to the lesson for the day or allow them to create their own unique artwork. Be sure that the tempera paints or watercolors you set out at the art station are washable and that you provide a large shirt for the students to wear while they paint.

    Mixing Colors

    • One concept that kindergarten students can grasp is the mixing of colors. Teaching them what happens when you mix two colors together can be accomplished by allowing them to simply explore these possibilities with the paints. Give the students watercolors and ask them to mix the various colors together and see what occurs. Have the students record their findings and share the results with the class.

    Hand Prints

    • Create a class banner with each student's hand print. Take a large roll of paper and write the name of your class in large letters. To keep the mess to a minimum, paint one hand of each student and ask him/her to stamp it somewhere on the banner. After every student has done this, display the banner outside your classroom.
