Hairbrush Activities in Kindergarten

Kindergarten children are often taught lessons about daily self-care such as washing the face and brushing their teeth and hair. Lessons and activities involving hairbrushes can help children by making such lessons immediate and concrete. Sometimes a hairbrush can be more than a self-care tool, however: it can also be a reading or a history lesson.
  1. Self-Care Primer

    • Flash cards or question-and-answer games can be employed to teach children appropriate daily hair care. A flash card showing a child brushing his hair and questions such as "When do you..." or "What time of day do you..." can reinforce good grooming habits in kindergarten children.

    Alphabet Games

    • A hairbrush can be used as a learning tool when a teacher holds it up and asks what letter a hairbrush starts with. The hairbrush can be grouped with other objects starting with the letter H to give the children further clues.

    History Lesson

    • A hairbrush can be a history lesson. According to the African-American Registry website, Lydia O. Newman, an African-American of New York City, acquired a patent for a detachable hairbrush in 1898. Such a fact might be taught as part of a Black History Month lesson in February.

    Hygiene Lesson

    • Since young school children are at risk for problems like head lice, a kindergarten teacher may use hairbrushes as an object lesson to children that they must never use another child's hairbrush, or share things such as towels.
