Leaf Measuring Lesson Plans for Kindergarten

Since students learn about the changing leaf colors in kindergarten, it is useful to expand on this lesson for math exercises. Kindergarten is when students are taught specific measuring skills like height, length and weight. Graphs and charts are also introduced in kindergarten and the students can use them to collect their leaf measurement data.
  1. Comparing Leaf Sizes

    • This activity involves measuring and comparing leaf sizes. Give each table of students a bunch of leaves that are different sizes. Ask the students to sort the leaves from shortest to the longest. Then have the students measure the leaves on a ruler. Help your students record the measurement amounts. Show your students how the measurements confirmed their initial size sorting. Make sure your students have an idea of how to use a ruler. If they do not, then use this opportunity to show them how to use a ruler. Another option is to have the students measure the length and width.

    Leaf Handfuls

    • This activity measures leaves in handful, not in any metric method. Take the students outside to a group of trees with leaves on the ground. Ask the students to grab a handful of leaves, using one or two hands at your discretion. Go back inside with your students and have them place the leaves they collected on their individual desks. You can provide paper plates for them if you like. Let the students count their leaves. Draw a chart on the board and have each student list the amount each she collected. Ask the students to look and compare the different handful sizes.

    Leaf Graphs

    • This activity takes uses measuring and expands on it to help students learn graphing. Take your students outside to where there are trees. Help your students collect different types and amounts of leaves. Bring the leaves inside the classroom and spread them out over desks. Group the different leaves together. Together with your students, count the amount of leaves in each group. Graph the amount versus type of leaves on the board with the help of your students.

    Leaf Crunching

    • Instead of measuring activities for the leaf, this activity focuses on measuring the crunched up leaves. Give each table a measuring cup. Give each table different amounts of leaves in multiples of tens, starting from 10. Ask each group to crunch the leaves either with their hands or shoes. If they crunch the leaves with their shoes make sure they do it over plastic or newspaper. Have the children collect the leaves in their cups and determine how much of the measuring cup is filled.
