How many words should a fifth grader be able to read per minute?

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average reading rate for fifth graders is 90 words per minute (wpm).

However, this can vary depending on the individual student's reading level and the difficulty of the text.

For example, some fifth graders may be able to read up to 120 wpm, while others may only be able to read 60 wpm.

NCES also found that:

- Fifth-grade students who scored at the 90th percentile in reading fluency read at an average rate of 163 wpm

- At the 75th percentile read at an average rate of 133 wpm

- At the 50th percentile read at an average rate of 100 wpm

- At the 25th percentile read at an average rate of 75 wpm

- At the 10th percentile read at an average rate of 53 wpm

Generally speaking, a fifth grader should be able to read at a rate that allows them to understand and comprehend the text. If a fifth grader is struggling to read at the expected rate, it may be helpful to provide them with extra reading practice and support.
