- Fifth-grade students who scored at the 90th percentile in reading fluency read at an average rate of 163 wpm
- At the 75th percentile read at an average rate of 133 wpm
- At the 50th percentile read at an average rate of 100 wpm
- At the 25th percentile read at an average rate of 75 wpm
- At the 10th percentile read at an average rate of 53 wpm
Generally speaking, a fifth grader should be able to read at a rate that allows them to understand and comprehend the text. If a fifth grader is struggling to read at the expected rate, it may be helpful to provide them with extra reading practice and support.
