Day Field Trip Checklist for Parents

The start of the school year brings a flurry of new activities for both children and parents. Parents have to divide their schedules between work, school, child care, homework and sports. It is best for the entire family to simplify organization as much as possible.

Even preschoolers may take a couple of day field trips each school year. As your child gets older, he or she may take several field trips during the year as an important part of the learning process. Parents will want to be prepared by having a day field trip checklist available.
  1. Necessary Information

    • As a parent, you will want to know the basics of what is happening on your child's day field trip. Responsible parents do not like to be in the dark. For this reason, here are questions to top off your checklist, with the necessary and basic information you will require:

      1. Where is the field trip? (place, city, address)
      2. When is the field trip? (Date)
      3. Is there a permission slip I need to sign and return to the school?
      4. Is there a rain date should the weather be inclement?
      5. What should my child wear?
      6. What time will my child arrive at destination? When will my child depart to return home?
      7. What is the cost of the field trip?
      8. If a cost is involved, when do I need to pay?
      9. Should my child bring a packed lunch, or will lunch be purchased or provided?
      10. Will my child need any spending money?
      11. Will my child be riding the bus or riding with another parent? What safety precautions will be taken?
      12. What is the student/chaperone ratio? (Suggested is no more than 10:1.)
      13. Are all adult chaperones required to have child abuse/background checks?

    Day of Departure

    • In addition to learning all the basic field trip information beforehand, parents will want to add to their day field trip checklist some essential items that should not be overlooked on the date of departure:

      1. What time is my child to arrive at school?
      2. Is my child dressed appropriately, including bringing a jacket if needed?
      3. Did I return the field trip permission slip to the teacher?
      4. Does my child have his or her lunch and any necessary spending money?
      5. Does my child have any special medications needed to give to the teacher?
      6. If my child is riding with another parent, did I remember his or her car seat if necessary?

Preparing ahead of time will ensure that the trip is easier for everyone involved, including your child. You will also have greater peace of mind about the trip.
