What Are the Benefits of Parent Involvement?

Simply hoping that your children get the most of their education may not be enough. In fact, direct involvement by parents in their child's education will greatly increase the chances of their success. While it is possible for students to excel in school and society when parents do not contribute at all, most kids can reap major benefits from parental involvement.
  1. Grades, Attendance And Homework

    • Students who have parents who are actively involved in their lives tend to achieve more, according to education website Edutopia.com.

Regardless of socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity or even the educational accomplishments of the parents, grades tend to be higher. In addition, students with involved parents have better attendance records at school and complete more of their assignments than those with parents who take a passive approach to their child's education.

    Special Education Placement

    • Special education classes are an important part of the education system. These classes assist students with learning disabilities or other special needs through an assortment of classroom and academic modifications so that they can complete a quality education and move forward in their lives and find success. Parents must remain advocates for their special needs children in order to make their child receives the modifications and they are followed.
Unfortunately special education classes see more than the occasional student who does not have a physical problem. In many instances these students have simply never been taught to apply themselves in school and have never been pressured by parents who believe they can do better.

Meanwhile, students who have parents that are actively involved in their educational experience and stress its importance have fewer children who are placed in these special needs classes, according to the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory website.

    Social Behavior

    • Involvement by parents tends to promote positive attitudes in their children when it comes to school. These students are not as likely to get in trouble for misbehaving in class and generally function better in society as a whole when their parents are a regular part of their lives and their schoolwork.

    College Enrollment

    • Because of the higher grades, higher completed assignment percentage and good attendance, more students with involved parents make it through to graduation. This higher graduation rate translates to higher numbers of enrollment in post-secondary schooling. Put simply, getting involved in your child's life during high school makes the chances of them moving on to college much better, according to PTO Today's website.

    Parent Benefits

    • In addition to all of the increased success by the involved-parents' children, this involvement also benefits the parents themselves directly, according to PTO Today.

Parents who are involved at school tend to have more confidence as parents and are held in high regard by the faculty, which will also indirectly benefit the student by raising expectations from faculty. Involved parents may also get the learning "bug" and enroll in continuing education classes more often to advance their own careers or knowledge.
