How to Read FCAT Scores

According to the Florida Department of Education, the FCAT "measures the Sunshine State Standards in reading and mathematics." Students are scored on various questions depending on grade level. Once the FCAT is completed and graded, parents and teachers are sent a four-page color report detailing the results. Only two of these pages are needed to assess the student's score, and parents can quickly determine whether their child has passed or failed.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a copy of the "Sunshine State Standards Reading and Mathematics Parent and Student Report". Review the letter to parents on page one, then view pages two and three for the child's results.

    • 2

View the table on the left side of page two to review the reading test results. Find the score summary below the table to determine whether the child passed or failed.

    • 3

Locate the "Content Areas" section on the right side of page two for a breakdown of the student's reading score. Review the bottom of the page for information about the "Achievement Levels" and a summary of past test results.

    • 4

Locate page three in the four-page pamphlet for the student's mathematics scores, consulting the table on the left side of the page to determine if the student passed or failed. Review the "Content Areas" breakdown and "Achievement Levels" for mathematics.
