How to Learn 6th Grade Math & Reading

There are plenty of available resources, both online and in your local bookstore, that can help you train your sixth-grader the core subjects of math and reading comprehension. At the sixth grade, students need to have a firm grasp of how to read, as well as how to understand what they are reading. They should be able to use their basic addition, subtraction and division skills to tackle more difficult equations involving fractions, algebra and more.

Go to the education section of your local book store. There will be a plethora of books about learning math and developing strong reading skills for the sixth-grade level. Look for books with worksheets so the student can practice the skills he has learned. Books with images may help clarify what he is learning.

Establish which skills the student is required to learn. For example, sixth-grade students must be able to apply their knowledge of root words and common text features to understand what they are reading. They also must comprehend the text, make inferences, and understand the pattern the literature is taking based on their knowledge of the story. They must be able to identify the text's purpose and audience, use correct grammar, and identify nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.

Consider getting a tutor or trained professional to teach sixth-grade math. In sixth-grade math, students typically learn some pre-algebra and geometry, which requires concentration and problem-solving abilities. Try to identify weaknesses in the child's understanding of these math topics and discover fun ways to teach the basics, such as using visuals and real-life examples. For instance, teach fundamental geometry by having the child draw various angles and triangles and and then use them in a picture. Or, make shapes out of straws and pipe cleaners.
