First Day of School Journal Topics

Whether you are assigning the journal as a school assignment or you are a parent encouraging the student to record his reflections on his first day of school, crafting a journal will help improve the student's reading and writing skills. Although you may have to help with the actual writing of the entries, the student will be forming the sentences you write. The journal can also become a treasured keepsake that is looked back on with nostalgia for many years.
  1. Classmates

    • Discuss the student's first impression of classmates in the journal. Write who he made friends with and why. Record the names of any classmates he remembers and take notes on how he describes them. Ask him what he did with his new friends that day and why he likes them. Ask him what he thinks his new friends thought of him. Discuss what he hopes to do tomorrow with his newly made friends.

    Teacher

    • Record what the student can say to describe the teacher. Write down his first impression of her and what kind of activities she did with the class that day. Ask if he spoke to the teacher directly and recount what he remembers of the dialogue. Inquire if he was nervous to meet her, or excited and describe his feelings at meeting his first teacher.

    Activities

    • Ask the student what his favorite and least favorite activities of the day were. Write down what he did in class, what crafts he made and what stories were read. Record what the student did at recess and who he played with. Jot down his impressions of lunch time and record what he ate and who he sat beside. Record whether he felt the day was long or went by fast. Ask him if anything humorous happened that day and write down the story.

    Expectations

    • Ask the child what his feelings were about starting school and being away from home for a full day. Record his emotions, whether he was scared, excited or both. Write what he expected the classroom, the teacher and the classmates to be like and record what they were like in actuality. Write down his thoughts on what he expects he will like about school and what he does not think he will like. This will likely produce some humorous and clever responses.
