The student can use an experiment to find out how effective different hand soaps are. The student should instruct several other people in how to wash their hands. One kid should use water only, one should use dish soap, one should use bar soap and one should use liquid hand soap. One could also use foaming soap. The children should wash their hands for the same amount of time in hot water. After washing, the child conducting the experiment should squirt some germ-identifying soap or liquid onto the volunteer's hands. The liquid turns colors with the presence of germs. The child should note which method was most effective at reducing germs.
For this project, the child should have several volunteers to act as hand washers. The volunteers should wash their hands in the same way with the same soap and water temperature for the same amount of time. After washing and drying, the student inspects the hands with an ultraviolet pen. The pen reveals any presence of germs and dirt still on the hands. The student should inspect each volunteer and write down which areas of the hand gather the most germs even after washing.
For this project, students discover whether hand washing with soap or hand sanitizer is better at removing germs and bacteria. The child needs several volunteers. Half the volunteers should wash their hands with soap and water and half should use sanitizer only. The child can then use a UV pen to inspect the hands to determine which cleaning method worked best at removing the bacteria and germs. The child could also use a microscope to inspect the hands.
This project takes several months to complete. Instruct one group of children to wash their hands after every bathroom break. The second group should wash their hands after meals and bathroom breaks. The third group should wash their hands after bathroom breaks, meals and outdoor excursions. Over the next several months, the student should record how often each of the children was sick The student can then determine whether more frequent hand washing has a visible effect on the health of people.
