Build a home library. Encourage your child to read by helping him to develop his own personal home library of books. This creates a sense of ownership for his new hobby and allows him to collect books to read throughout the year.
Start a family book club. Choose a book or books that the entire family can read and discuss together. This allows your child to feel as if reading is a fun and engaging activity and not something she is told to do as punishment.
Link reading to summer activities. Encourage your child to research and read about things that are associated with activities that he does during the summer. For example, if your child takes a trip to the beach during the summer, he can read about marine life before the visit.
Find a summer reading program. Many public libraries offer free programs for summer reading for children.
Incorporate writing tasks into your child's literacy program. You can have your child write a report on a topic of her choice or a topic related to prior reading and present it to you. You may also purchase a journal for your child and encourage her to write down her daily experiences.
