Parent Involvement in School Activities

A child with an involved parent achieves higher test scores, misses school less frequently, is more likely to graduate from high school and is less likely to use drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, many parents have demanding work schedules that prevent them from volunteering during normal school hours. Fortunately, there are options available for parents who want to be more involved with their child's education.
  1. Involvement at Home

    • Parental assistance with homework assignments prepares children for classroom activities.

Parents don't have to be at school to actively participate in their child's activities. Parental involvement begins in the home. Parents can help their child complete homework assignments and verify that their child comprehends and retains the subject matter material. Showing a genuine interest in a child's educational pursuits and challenges will create a positive learning atmosphere. A child who receives emotional and educational support from a parent will have the confidence and self-esteem needed to overcome obstacles and challenges. Parental involvement directly impacts academic success.

    After-school Activities

    • Involvement in after-school activities strengthens parent-school relationships.

After-school activities are one option for busy parents who are not able to volunteer during normal school hours. Parents have to opportunity to connect with educational staff knowledgeable of community resources and family support services. Parents can meet and discuss school-related events and issues with other parents, thus creating stronger bonds within the community. Parents involved in after-school activities are also more likely to form connections and relationships with daytime teachers. Parental involvement in after-school activities provides the same benefits as direct involvement during normal school hours.

    Parent-Teacher Conferences

    • Parent-teacher conferences are essential for academic success.

Communication between parents and teachers is essential for student achievement in the classroom. Parents are informed of potential and existing academic and behavioral problems and can focus on resolving issues with their child at home. Parent involvement supports teachers by reducing the amount of time teachers need to spend addressing issues that arise from lack of parental involvement. Teachers supported by involved parents spend more time teaching and less time resolving behavioral issues. Children who do not have involved parents demand more teaching and educational resources to keep up with their peers.

    The Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

    • The PTA is a national organization designed to inform and involve parents and community members in school-related issues and decisions. The PTA is a forum where parents and teachers can voice opinions and concerns affecting educational opportunities or issues unique to their community. The PTA unites parents and teachers to achieve common goals and maintain a positive educational environment through programs and services offered through the PTA organization. The PTA also has the power to influence laws and policies that pertain to education at local, state and national levels.
