This experiment will make a glue paste. You can do this experiment with younger children at home or in a classroom. First, gather the necessary ingredients: flour, water, stir sticks or Popsicle sticks, and a bowl. Take 1/2 cup of white flour and add 2/3 cup of water. Stir with a Popsicle stick until the mixture has a paste-like texture. Use the stir stick to daub it onto crafts.
For a smoother, more school-glue-type texture, you can cook the glue. This should be done under adult supervision. First, bring 5 cups of water to a boil. In another bowl, add 1 cup of water and add 1/4 cup of flour. Use a whisk to smooth out the mixture, and slowly pour it into the boiling mixture, whisking as you fold it in. Let the mixture boil for two to three minutes, and then set it aside to cool before using it as glue.
To make glue from milk you'll need skim milk, measuring cups, measuring spoons, vinegar, baking soda, paper towels and cups. Measure out 1/2 cup of skim milk, and add 2 tbsp. of vinegar. Stir them together. Let the mixture sit for about two to three minutes. You should have curds and whey in the cup now, instead of milk. Strain out the whey through a paper towel, and then put the curds between a fresh paper towel and express the rest of the whey. When you are finished, put them in a cup and add 2 tbsp. of water and 1 tbsp. of baking soda. Stir them together, and the reaction will make glue. If the mixture is too thick, add more water.
You can make homemade bouncing balls from a bottle of school glue, borax laundry soap, corn starch, cups to mix in, a stirring stick and food coloring, which is optional, but makes a prettier finished ball. Get two cups, either of different colors or that can be written on. Put 4 oz. of warm water in one cup and stir in 1 tsp. of borax. In the other cup put 1 tbsp. of glue and the food coloring, if desired. Next, add 1/2 tsp. of the borax mixture and 1 tbsp. of cornstarch, but don't stir them yet. Wait 15 seconds and then begin to stir. Eventually the mixture will become too stiff to stir. Remove it and roll it around in your hands until you have a nice round ball. The ball will last for a couple of days before it loses its bounce.
