How to Deal With a School That Won't Address Bullying

Resolving a situation involving a child who is bullied at school requires attention from the child's family as well as the school he attends. The school is responsible for his safety throughout the day, and without the help and support of administrators when confronting the bullying issue, the problem becomes even more profound. If your attempt to deal with the school directly does not get results, appeal to the community as a whole to make sure the bullying comes to a stop.

Instructions

    • 1

Communicate clearly with your child to gather details about the current bullying situation. If you have yet to document or report an incident, write a list of the names of the bullies, along with the details of the incident according to your child. Gather any evidence you have of the first incident (such as photos of physical harm or doctors' notes) to show to the school.

    • 2

Organize and gather all of the related documents before confronting the school again if you have previously reported incidents. Information like call logs and meeting notes from your prior interaction with teachers and school officials help you prove the bullying is an ongoing issue. Keep a list of specific names of the bullies to help when finding solutions to the problem.

    • 3

Prepare your thoughts and know what you would like done about the situation before meeting and confronting the principal or teacher in charge. Becoming overemotional during the confrontation will not allow you to convey the message about your child's safety without distraction.

    • 4

Explain to your child why you are confronting the school and why it is also important that he is protected from any type of bullying. Inform your child of how bullying is inappropriate and why it is vital to stop it from continuously occurring.

    • 5

Call the school to speak with your child's teacher directly about the incident. Inform the teacher of the previous incidents of bullying and request a meeting or a solution.

    • 6

Set up a meeting with the school's principal and your child's teacher if the bullying is not taken seriously by the teacher alone. Show all of your bullying documentation and explain to the school it is their responsibility to ensure the safety of your child during school hours.

    • 7

Request that action be taken in the school, whether it is a new bullying policy or written rules for students. Ask the school to keep you updated on any further changes to their own bullying policy or rules within the school to stay informed.
